USB to Serial Converter. Working fine - now Disabled?!

Bizarre issue last night - I'm working away configuring a Cisco router
when bham! the whole laptop crashes. Its a HP with Windows XP Pro on
it. Frustratingly I have to power off and reboot.

Since the reboot my USB to serial converter just doesn't work anymore.
In Device Manager it shows up with a Red X on it. When I go into it it
clearly says "This device is disabled. (Code 22). Click Enable Device
to enable this device. When you try and enable it, it just says
Windows was not able to enable this device.

Bizarre as it was working and now not - makes me think Windows has
disabled it because it was the cause of the crash but can I switch
this back on somewhere? In the registry perhaps?

I work in IT all day, everyday but even this had me stuck!

Any help appreciated.

Try reloading the driver for the convertor. You may have to uninstall it
first. Not that unusual, really. I've had that happen to me on my Dell and
HP/Compaq notebooks. A simple reload of the drivers does the trick.

In the past I've resorted to devcon.exe to re-enable devices where the
Windows GUI said that it couldn't be enabled.

Since I have devcon.exe in my own "tools" directory, it presumably was
not an integral part of my XP system, so I probably downloaded it from
the Microsoft website; probably last century.
