Hidden device "Beep"

Some time ago togglekeys stopped beeping when I pressed "Caps Lock".
My own programs, calling the "Beep" function stopped beeping.
These beeps had been coming from the system speaker (my soundcard and PC
speakers are woring pefectly, thank you, I'm listening to Max Bruch as I
type). The speaker that beeps when you turn on the PC with bad memory
installed. The little one inside the case.
The one that *still* beeps if you annoy the BIOS program...

I just found the hidden, non-plug and play device "beep" is disabled.
I tried to enable it: "Windows was not able to enable this device"

No Google hits on: beep "Windows was not able to enable this device

So, should I try the standard technique for such devices? Uninstall it,
reboot, and pray?

I found the answer in an IBM internal newsgroup:

devcon enable @root\legacy_beep\0000

How it had become disabled is a mystery lost in time.
Why devcon could enable it whereas "Device Manager" simply said "Windows
was not able to enable the device" is just another part of the puzzle.
But my beeps are back, so I'm happy.
