USB to Serial Adapter

I have a Dell Inspiron XPS, the laptop has no serial ports, and I need to
connect to network equipment via a console port.

So, I bought a USB-Serial adapter... The manufacturer says it doesn't need
drivers in XP, and it shows up as a Human-Interface-Device... But does not
assign a COM port to the device, so I cannot connect through HyperTerminal.

Is there any way I can get a COM port assigned to it.

I have tried manually adding a COM port, but I get a 'the device cannot
start (Code 10)'...

What you have is a simple port gender changer. What you
need, if you can find one, is an external serial card that
connects to the computer via the USB or PCMCIA slot.

You can try Google, Cyberguys, Belkin, Adaptec, OrangeMicro.

Maybe somebody else has a better solution?

Ok so you contacted the manufacturer's tech support, and they replied
that it should not look like COM port to the computer?
If so, return it, and get one that will look like COM port...

I am getting the impression this thing is purely a gender changer of sorts,
only meant to convert serial mice to USB...
