"USB To RS232 Interface (V1.0) BaudRate 2400bps" screwing up Sidewinder?

J

John Smith

Hi folks,

Since upgrading to a new computer with Windows XP, my non-USB Microsoft
Sidewinder devices (gamepad, joystick, wheel) are acting all wacky. When I
open up my Game Controller control panel, it has 2 entries:

Microsoft SideWinder game pad
USB To RS232 Interface (V1.0) BaudRate 2400bps

When I check the properties of this USB device in that control panel, it
shows 32 flashing lights on the test page, many of which that seem to flash
at random. Because of how my games now operate, I suspect this is what is
screwing up my game controllers (and several of my games).

But I can't delete this driver from the Game Controller control panel; it
says to check out the Device Manager. When I go there, it has many different
USB controllers, but nothing called "USB To RS232 Interface (V1.0) BaudRate
2400bps". I don't want to just delete USB devices at random, as I have many
USB devices, including my mouse and keyboard.

Anyone have any advice?

Thanks
Greg

Hi Greg,

The USB to RS232 Interface is a device which can convert the USB device to
the RS232 device. If you don't have such device installed, you can remove
it in the Device Manager. If the device will be recognized and installed by
the system automatically when you restart the computer, let's disable it in
the Device Manager.

We also can delete teh gamepad. Then, follow the steps to reinstall it:

1. Connect your SideWinder game controller to the game port or USB port in
your computer.

2. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.

3. Double-click Game Controllers.

4. Click Add.

5. In the Game Controllers box, click "Microsoft SideWinder (Auto Detect)",
and then click OK.

Note: the Microsoft SideWinder Game Controller software version 3.0 is not
compatible with the Windows XP. We only can install the SideWinder game
controller as the above steps in the Windows XP. Please don't install the
Microsoft SideWinder Game Controller software version 3.0.

If the suggestion does not work, please let me know and I will continue to
help you.

Hi Steven,

Thanks, but I think you've misunderstood. I already have TWO controllers
listed in the "Game Controllers" control panel:

- Microsoft SideWinder game pad
- USB to RS232 Interface (v1.0) BaudRate 2400bps

I want to get RID of the USB to RS232 Interface. But when I try to remove it
in the Game Controllers control panel, I get an error that says:

"The device you have selected can not be removed from here. Please
use the Device Manager."

But in the Device Manager, there is nothing called "USB to RS232 Interface
(v1.0) BaudRate 2400bps". I have 5 "USB Root Hub" devices in there, 4 USB
Universal Host Controller" devices in there, plus a few others. What am I
supposed to remove in the Device Manager?

Thanks
Greg

Hi Greg,

Let's do the following steps.

1. Open the Device Manager
2. Click View > Show hidden devices in the menu
3. Let's see whether you can find the "USB to RS232 Interface (v1.0)
BaudRate 2400bps".

If yes, let's delete it in the Device Manager.

Hi Steven,

Turning on the "Show Hidden Devices" didn't seem to help. I looked through
the whole tree, but I couldn't find "USB to RS232 Interface (v1.0) BaudRate
2400bps".

In the USB tree, I have:

- 5 "USB Root Hub" devices
- 4 USB Universal Host Controller" devices
- Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller
- Microsoft Integrated USB Hub
- Microsoft Natural Keyboard Pro Composite Device
- Logitech USB Camera (Pro 4000)

No "USB to RS232 Interface (v1.0) BaudRate 2400bps". Yet, it still shows in
the Game Controller control panel, but it can't be deleted from there.

:-(

Hi John,

I think we need to install the following driver.

- Microsoft Natural Keyboard Pro Composite Device

http://download.microsoft.com/download/c/7/7/c77a4e8f-3a6d-4d7c-ac15-404ff50
36490/ITP5_0Eng.exe

- Logitech USB Camera (Pro 4000)

http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm?page=downloads/software&CRID=1794&contenti
d=6023&countryid=19&languageid=1

Let's see whether this works.
