Sometimes it works fine, but other times it will not show up in Windows
Explorer...however, it always shows up in disk management, has a drive
letter assigned to it and is accessible.

What could be wrong ?

I haven't a clue.

I'd give this a go, and make sure the drive letter
choice is well away from both ends of the lettering spectrum.
So there's no possibility of a conflict.

Chip failing. The OS sees the hardware bu the OS has troble reading the
virtual format of the data on the chip.

I dual boot and use Linux 90% of the time and never have had a problem
there so I don't believe it to be a H/W problem...
plus, Disk Management sees the drive just fine and assigns it a letter...

Then it is a file system format problem exacerbated by Linux.

I assume you are joking...as...

That makes zero sense, I clearly stated the drive works normally in
Linux...it's Windows that is giving me anomalous results...but too minor
for me to worry about I guess.

Right. It works in Linux but you can't see a drive letter under Windows
but it shows in Disk Management. Thus the file structure is not being
recognized by Windows so Linux must be doing something to it.

Nope, nothing to do with Linux.

I can use the same drive on another Windows machine and it works just
fine there.

anyway it's not a big enough problem to fuss about, I was just curious.

Back up your registry, then start regedit, expand and highlight the following keys and look in the right window
for "NoDrives". If you find it, delete it or set it to all zeros. You may have to restart the computer
for the change to take effect.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\Explorer

If its of any consolation, the same thing happens on my
w7 laptop. I usually plug and unplug the thumbdrive
about 3 times and it starts working.
Like you mentioned, its not a big deal so have not
looked for a solution. Have not tried Paul's and Ben's
solutions yet.

It happens so rarely it is not too big of a deal but I will see if I can
figure it out.
