USB Storage and Sony Cameras

S

Stephen J. Spencer

Ever since I did a Windows repair from the CD, my computer no longer detects
USB storage (e.g. memory sticks). I have a TEAC multicard reader built-in to
the computer. And when I insert a card, the green light on the reader is on,
suggesting that at least the unit is powered.

I also have a built-in multi-card reader to my flat-bed HP printer, which
connects to the computer via a USB cable. But again, the reader no longer
"talks" to the computer (although the LCD display on the printer indicates
that a card is in the slot).

Finally, although some USB devices (e.g. Logitech webcam, Creative Jukebox
3) appear to be working, others are scantly recognized (e.g my Sony digital
camera), and I can't do anything about them. By this I mean that when I
connect my sony camera, the computer will indicated that a new device has
been connected, and a few seconds later, that the device is ready to use.
Yet in Explorer, under "Scanners and Camera" I do not see anything
whatsoever. This is frustrating at best. I reinstalled all the USB drivers,
to no avail. Please help before I throw my stupid Dell machine out the
window (it is barely three months old, but it has given me so much grief).

In anticipation of your help, many thanks.

You may need to re-install the motherboard chipset drivers and USB filter
driver (if VIA chipset?)

How? How do I know what I have is a "VLA chipset"? When I open up the Device
Manager (within Control Panel, then System), under USB, this is what I see:

Universal Serial Bus controllers
Generic USB Hub
Intel(R) 82801G (ICH7 Family) USB Universal Host Controller - 27C8
Intel(R) 82801G (ICH7 Family) USB Universal Host Controller - 27C9
Intel(R) 82801G (ICH7 Family) USB Universal Host Controller - 27CA
Intel(R) 82801G (ICH7 Family) USB Universal Host Controller - 27CB
Intel(R) 82801G (ICH7 Family) USB2 Enhanced Host Controller - 27CC
Logitech USB Camera (Messenger)
USB Composite Device

USB Mass Storage Device
USB Root Hub

I don't know if this helps but I have a Dell XPS 400.

I downloaded the driver, and tried to reinstall (before I wrote my plea for
help), but to no avail. Could you please explain how to go about it? Thanks.

I installed the latest version of the chipset drivers. To no avail. Neither
memory stick nor sony digital camera is recognized by the computer. What
else can I do? I used the DriverAgent.com website to see if I had the latest
drivers. It keeps saying that the Sony driver is not up to date, even though
I have downloaded and installed at least a dozen times.

Short of reinstalling MS Windows XP from scratch on my lousy Dell computer,
what else can I try?

Did you look through the "Not Recognizing" section of
http://usbman.com/WinME USB Guide.htm

I really think the problem is the USB controller drivers though.. Dell
may have installed these drivers in a specific order because of problems
they experienced. I've seen many times where removing a sound card,
then installing a NIC, allowed the NIC to work. Afterwards the sound
card could be added. You could be having a similar problem. I know,
there's no problems shown in the Device Manager, but that's what
happened with the NICs too.

Hi Spencer,
I have been equally frustrated for the past 8 months with exactly the same
problem
as yours. The problem is not with the device-PARTITIONING & FORMATTING VIA
THE DISK MANAGER has been of no use. Chipset drivers reinstalled - no use. I
have used at least 10 devices(all flash-thumb drives, Sony, Samsung cameras).
Only iomega backup HDD and Zen drive is recognized by windows explorer. When
you open mycomputer-manage, it takes hours to get the display. I can change
drive letter and explore the device after another 15 minutes but only once
per session. If you remove and reattach, there is an error: device manager
could not laod. Similarly if I attach 2 USB devices the manager does not load
at all.

If the usb device is not connected, disk manager opens in 6 seconds. The
problem is not due to antivirus also(McAfee removed and then reinstalled). I
have tried all the available USB 4 ports. I have reinstalled SP2. I have
reached the upper limit of frustration. Now I have stopped using USB devices
in this desktop computer. THIS POST IS TO FIND OUT WHETHER YOU GOT THE
SOLUTION ? IF SO PLEASE DO LET US KNOW
