usb stick not working?

***** charles

Hi all,

I have the following:

Dell laptop Latitude D600 with 2 usb ports
Lexar 128M usb stick
XP Pro

I have been using the usb stick to do backups and
data storage for several years. All of a sudden
when I plug the usb stick in it says "do you want
to format it?" If I do that, I will loose a lot of stuff
I need to save. I have tried other computers and
I get the same response. Are there any software
tools out there that can help me get my data off
by usb stick that get around the auto mounting
process and access the data directly?

thanks,
charles......

Have you considered that you have already lost the information? The
standard format for flash memory removable storage is FAT. If several
systems give you the same message, then your card is faulty; either through
corruption of the format or a hardware error. 'Auto mounting' has nothing
to do with the problem. You can turn off 'auto mount', but it will not make
a difference in the problem you describe. I have a program from Lexar that
will recover erased images, but ONLY images. If a card is reformatted,
information can be recovered with this program, but not in an immediately
usable form (just what a recovery program for a hard drive would produce.)

My guess is that at best you have a chance, with a lot of work, at
recovering some of the information on your flash card; at worst, the card
itself is now faulty. Depending on how valuable the information is and how
much you can not recreate, you may want to search the Internet for recovery
programs. Also contact the manufacture of the flash card; they may offer a
recovery program.

Good luck.

Thanks for the response. I did search the Internet for a
recovery program and found a couple. The way they
work is that the demo version can determine if the files
are "seeable" and if they are then to actually save the
files you have to purchase the program. I also have a
backup plan in that I know of a company that does
data recovery at the hardware level. It has a 100 clean
room and it is in north Dallas, about 75 miles north east
of me. The problem is that they want from $250 to
$950 to get the data back. No charge if the data is
unrecoverable. I am hoping that it is not physical
damage to the device and something I can get around.
The files I could reproduce but it would be a big pain
in the neck.

You do know that flash memory has an actual lifetime right ?

The lifetime is not used up reading the drive, but writing to it.

Did you try the sharware one's to see if they can see anyting on it ?

A clean room is necessary to take apart a hard drive and swap the platters
into a new mechanism. Not something that is needed for a flash card. You
would have to ask specifically about a flash card to get correct
information.
