USB Printer re-installs itself

Windows XP Pro - every time I re-attach my printer to my laptop, I get
a message that "windows has found new hardware" and installs a second
copy of my printer. The default becomes corrupt and I am not able to
print.

This also happened when I installed a digital recorder as well.

Anyone have any idea on why this is happening? or a workaround?
