USB Ports have stopped recognising devices

I'm running Windows xp pro on a Sony Vaio desktop. For some reason all my USB
ports have stopped recognising devices connected. I've checked device
manager and all USB ports are 'working properly'. As far as I can tell, it
hasn't happened as a result of connecting anything new and I have not made
any changes to to settings/regisrties, etc (I wouldn't know where to start!).
I've tried a system restore to a time when they were all working but no
luck. Connecting, say, an i-pod, the usb is providing power to the device,
but it doesn't register it. Any help gratefully received.

Have you got a USB mouse to test the USB ports with? Check in system - do
any of the USB components say enhanced (I am check to see if you have USB 2)

Dick,

Thanks. I don't have a USB mouse, but have tried printer, i-pod, scanner,
wireless USB 2.0 Adapter all with USB but none are recognised (but before
last week all were!).
Appreciate your help here.

Did you check in system to see if you had enhanced USB (I guess you have
based on your comment). See if the system thinks it is working. Try
re-installing the driver just in case.
After that wait for the professionals to answer

Because I had several USB devices I had to install a USB card into my
computer. It was less than a year old when I had the same problem--nothing
worked, the card showed up in device manager as working properly, etc. I
finally removed the card and purchased another and all worked well again.
It may be something wrong with the hardware even though it appears in device
manager.

Dick,
Thanks. Tried your suggestions - no luck alas, As you say, seems like a
job for the professionals, esp in view of Pam's helpful posting as well.
Ah, well!!
