USB port sstop working

I have a new Compaq 4100 and 4200 workstation running XP.
I installed local USB printers and scanners on them and
than applied SP1 and all outstanding hotfixes. At this
point, the boxes could not "see" the printers or
scanners. In Hardware Manager, it indicates that the USB
ports are OK, but when I delete the printers and run the
hardware wizard, the OS can not see them.

Any ideas?

did the devices come with drivers?
if so install the drivers for the devices.
