sI am recently having a problem with adding USB devices on laptop with Win XP
SP2, and updated to the latest windows patches. Whenever I plug in a new
device, even a simple USB memory stick, it finds the new hardware by name,
but does not automatically add it. Windows starts the found new HW wizard,
and goes to the Internet to find the software, which fails becasue it cannot
find the neccesary SW.

This also happens for devices that used to work (it is now happening with a
wireless keyboard & mouse).

Sugestions about where to start? I am guessing something is messed with the
USB serial bus controllers. Should I try removing the generic USB hub and
letting XP reinstall?

Thanks,

Here's a post I found on the subject:

"I had a similar problem after plugging in a generic usb 2.0 hub to my
Dell dimension 4500 (WinXP home, SP2) and "wizard cannot find the
necessary software". Fortunately, Google found an answer for me in
http://redcl0ud.1.forumer.com/a/xbcd-not-finding-gamepad_post385-15.html
which suggested the problem was due to a file called usb.inf missing
from c:\Windows\inf. I found a file of the same name in c:\i386, copied
it to c:\Windows\inf, and that fixed the problem: next time I plugged in
the hub, the wizard found the drivers.
