USB not 2.0?

I am running XP MCE with latest fixes on my desktop PC.
On the front panel of the PC are a couple of USB connectors which I use
quite a bit.
Recently, (I can't recall when this started), whenever I plug a USB device
into one of
these connectors, I get a typical Windows hover text message saying the USB
port is "not
a Hi-Speed USB 2.0 port".
The port works, but now I'm not sure if it's working at 2.0 speed or not.
Has anyone seen this message? Is there a way to determine the speed of this
USB port?

Thanks.

Ron, do you use the port for storage devices and they run Ok. If yes, then
it's a USB 2.
Go to Device Manager>USB Controllers>expand and look for Enhanced USB in
the
title. That indicates 2.0.

Well, that's where it gets confusing.
In my Device Manager, I see 4 Untel 82801G (1CH7 FamilY) "USB Universal Host
Controller" entries.
Then I see, 2 that say "VIA Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host Controller",
then
finally, 1 that says "VIA USB Enhanced Host Controller"

I have 4 USB external ports that came with the PC, fed from the mother
board.
I also, have a diskette drive with several memory cards readers, and a
single USB 2.0 port.
To round it out, I have a connector at the back panel, plugged into a
motherboard USB port that feeds another 4 USB ports.
(I have several external devices that use USB)
I get the message when I plug into any of the USB ports.
I guess my main question is, why would I start getting this message? I
never used to.
I am set up to automatically receive and install updates.

Thanks.

The device you are trying to connect ... is it USB 2.0 or USB 1.1? The
device must be 2.0 to be able to benefit the Enhanced USB 2.0 features. If
the device is not 2.0, then the USB device port will degrade to 1.1 or 1.0
automatically.

USB really depends on what type is plugged into them.

It is definately a USB 2.0 device. I have a couple of other devices
(i.e. flash drives) and they all cause the message to be issued.
I've tried plugging into other USB ports that are connected directly to the
motherboard and get the same message. I'm going to look for the CD that
came with the motherboard (ASUS). Maybe something happened to the drivers?

Thanks.

I decided to check what my BIOS options were.
There is a setting labeled "USB Function" and it was set to "Enabled'
There is also a setting labeled "USB 2.0 Controller", and it was disabled!
I enabled it, which then caused another setting to be displayed labeled
"USB 2.0 Controller Mode (HiSpeed, FullSpeed)". I set it to HiSpeed
(420Mbps)
and rebooted.
Now, when I plug in my USB devices I no longer get that message and Device
Manager
now shows all of my USB controllers as being "Enhanced".
I really don't recall messing with those settings, but it's working now.
Another
lesson learned.
Thanks for the tips.
