Mass storage and USB port

My device manager shows under Universal Serial Bus controllers the
following:
Intel(R) 82801EB USB Universal Host Controller- 24D2,24D4,24D7,24DE,and
Intel(R) 82801EB USB2 Enhanced Host Controller-24DD and USB ROOT HUB
five times. There is no yellow '?'.

Now my problem is that when I connect my Mass Storage Device (External
HD), I get the following:
The USB Mass Storage device is a HI -speed USB device and will function
at reduced speed when plugged into a non-Hi-Speed port.
The hubs shown in bold type have free ports that can support Hi-speed
USB device. Below this is a tree that shows 24DD and below that USB ROOT
HUB (8 ports){this in bold letters} and below that are 8 Unused Ports.
Recommendation is that "Disconnect the USB mass storage device from its
current port end then connect it to one of the ports on hub shown in
BOLD type.

I have added one to 4 USB port hub in one of the USB ports in the back
of the box so that the USBs ports at available conviently to me on the
table. It is in one of this device to which my External HD gets
connected. I removed this (one to 4 USB port hub) and tried one by one
different ports of the PC but I get the same message initially when I
use my external device.

Any recommendation as to what is to be done to get the HD connected to
the Hi-speed port so that I do not get the message "Hi-speed USB plugged
into non -HI-speed SUB Hub".

Also is there any way I could know which USB hub is which number?
I would be greatful for the advice.

I'm not sure I followed all of that but will try to answer anyhow.

It sounds like your system has a mix of high speed ports and lower speed.
For the external drive, connect it to a high speed port to get higher
transfer rates. If you need to connect a hub so that the connection for the
drive is more accessible, the hub should be high speed also.

If there are other slower USB items connected to the same USB hub -
disconnect them for now. They could interfere with the drive getting high
speed recognition. If moving 1.x devices off of high speed helps, consider
keeping them on the lower speed ports. You could use a hub (either speed)
to keep them grouped together.

I don't know of any way to match up the device manager numbers to the
actual physical ports. The manual for the system or ports (if supplied by
add-on cards) should point out which ones are which.
