USB modem disconnecting

Clive Long,UK

This is a long-shot

I have a USB modem that I connect to two different PCs that run the
same operating system (XP service pack 2) and have identical modem
drivers installed.

The modem connection to the ISP from PC 1 is stable. The same modem
connected to the same phone line and PC 2 the modem disconnects after
30 seconds to one minute of connectivity - every tiem.

What could be the cause?

Thanks

Clive

I had a faulty motherboard a few years back that ran fine 99% of the time
but when I used the modem (this was a serial modem) it would cut out at
intermittent times. Took ages to work out that it was actually the mobo that
had problems and not the modem or the software.

I guess this only applies to laptops, but you might also want to check
the power-save settings on the USB devices. Some are set to power down
after a certain period of inactivity.

I think that using USB modems leads to a general problem due to a lack
of constant power supply to the USB so that any fluctuations will
cause it to disconnect.

If ADSL modem is what we are talking about the usual response is to
recommend the purchase of a router/modem.

Initially I had an ADSL modem (provided by the ISP) but often I would
find that a big download was lost because of disconnections part way
through. Very frustrating if the PC had been left unattended while the
task was undertaken.

My research at that time made it clear that USB modems were prone to
cause such problems.

The difference of performance between the 2 PCs may be down to power
supply and the various devices on each PC using up the power.

Interesting idea

I have a powered USB hub and I have bought an PCI USB 2.0 Card. I will
try both and see what happens

Thanks for the suggestion
