USB memory stick suddenly not working after using a friend's compu

I have a Lexarmedia Jumpdrive 256 MB. I have used it as a backup for my
school work and to work on it when I am not at my home computer.

I have had no problems with going back and forth between home and school
computers, but the other day I used it on my friends laptop, saved my work
and pulled out the stick. When I got home, I plugged it into my home
computer, and (I have XP) a window popped up at the bottom saying the USB
device had been detected, and then a brief window opened showing "scanning"
of one of the folders I had saved on the stick, but then another window
popped up saying please insert disk into drive e. (where the stick was
already plugged in).

When I go to My Computer, it shows up as a removable storage device in my e
drive, but when I double click to open the drive, it still doesn't open. I
found the following link on the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;890202
maybe this is the problem? I'm waiting to find out what type of system my
friend had on her laptop, but I think its XP too. She might have an older
version of Word though.

In the meantime, if my jumpdrive is not repairable, is there somewhere I can
take it in to have someone retrieve the contents? I know there is stuff
still inside it, the computers just aren't reading it. Please let me know if
you can help...my thesis is on there and it's due in three weeks!

You have almost certainly corrupted the file system on your stick - probably
because you unplugged it while it was in use.
(Windows has a utility to close down removable drives first which you should
have used)

I do not think your link is relevent as your friend almost certainly does
not have windows 2000

You can reformat your stick and it will be fine - but I do not think you
will be able to get the data off it

Sorry

Yeah, turns out she has XP and Word 2003-Teacher's Edition.

So I know there is all this talk about stopping and not stopping devices.
Then why is that XP has an option (If you click on the device and go to
properties) that allows you to choose either "easy" removal, or "stop
device" removal. Both my computers and my friend's computer had checked off
the selection to allow easy removal without caching....If what everyone says

ok, the update on this is that I went back to my friend's laptop, plugged in
the jumpdrive, and voila! everything was there. So for the time being, I
have copied all the contents of my jumpdrive to a CD.

But what is the underlying issue here? Why can I now only view it on her
computer? I do know that she has not updated her computer with XP Service
Pack 2. Is there some kind of incompatibility when using USB ports and
switching between computers that do and do not have SP2? If so, how can I
remedy this?
