USB mass storage flicky on WinXP home

N

newsgrponly

I have recently bought a mp3 player, which is a USB (1.1) mass storage.
I tried plugged it into a WinXP home machine (SP2), and Win prompts
for driver (which is strange). On that same XP home machine, I have
another USB (2.0) mass storage installed with no problem. To rule out
the mp3 player, I plug it into a XPPro and a 2K machine. In both
instances, the mp3 player is recognized as a mass storage device. I am
running out of ideas... Any help is appreciated.

Are all XP systems running at same upgrade levels?

Besides which, if the System request a driver file, then it is a safe bet
that whatever is the device: there is not a driver in the system database.

Don't forget USB 2.0 is not the same as USB 1.0 and drivers for each type of
device are unique. In the same way as a device driver for Win 98 may be
different from that for Win XP.

All clear as mud?
