USB Mass Storage/external HDD

M

Michael

I recently bought a new Western Digital 80 hard drive and
a generic external enclosure.

The system recognized it and it ran beautifully.

After a reboot, the system no longer recognizes the
device; the Device Manager shows 'USA Mass Storage
Device' with an error flag : "Code 10 : This device
cannot start."

The drive came with the Data Lifeguard CD which currently
won't recognize that the drive exists (although it did
when I originally installed it).

I tried removing and reinstalling the drivers; the USB
Mass Storage one comes with Windows SP1; and also the
external enclosure CD installed a few USB drivers for a
NEC chipset.

I've currently got these drivers listed; two on-board USB
ports.

NEC PCI to USB Enhanced Host Controller (B1)
NEC PCI to USB Open Host Controller
NEC PCI to USB Open Host Controller
USB 2.0 Root Hub
USB Mass Storage Device (error)
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub

Would very much appreciate any help. Thanks.

I have the same problem too with XP home edition.

some other website has the following solution, but it doesn't work for me.
Still waiting for help....

Explanation
NTFS could not write data to the transaction log. This could affect the
ability of NTFS to stop or roll back the operations for which the transaction
data could not be written. NTFS could not write data because of one or more
of the following reasons:

I/O requests issued by the file system to the disk subsystem might not have
been completed successfully.

User Action
If this message appears frequently, run Chkdsk to repair the file system.

To repair the file system
Save any unsaved data and close any open programs.
Restart the computer.
The volume is automatically checked and repaired when you restart the
computer.
Alternatively, you can run the Chkdsk tool from the command prompt without
shutting down the computer first. Click Start, click Run, and then type cmd.
At the command prompt, type “chkdsk /R /X Driveâ€. Chkdsk runs and
automatically repairs the volume. Repeat this step for each volume on the
disk. If the following message appears, type Y. “Cannot lock current drive.
Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you
like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system
restarts?†The next time the computer is started, Chkdsk will automatically
run.

If other USB devices are working fine on your system, check the external
drive connections. Reset the external enclosure(turn Off and then On). If
issue persists, the USB port needs to be refreshed to make sure that no
other device has captured the USB port of the computer.

Follow the steps given below to reinstall USB ports:

1. Right-click My Computer icon on the desktop, and then select
Properties.
2. Click the Hardware tab.
3. Click the Device Manager button.
4. Click the (+) sign to the left of Universal Serial Bus controllers.
5. Right-click the device listed under Universal Serial Bus controller
and select Uninstall.
6. Click OK to confirm the removal of the device.

NOTE: Repeat steps 5 and 6 until all the devices under Universal
Serial Bus Controller are removed.

7. Shut down the computer.

CAUTION: Ensure that the Shut Down option is selected, instead of
the Restart option.

8. Wait for 5 seconds and then restart the computer. When the
computer restarts, a "Windows has detected new or added hardware"
message window will open.

NOTE: You will have to insert the Windows CD-ROM into the
CD drive, if prompted.

The above steps will refresh the USB ports.

I hope this helps.

I'm also having the identical problem as Michael has. In fact I'm using the
WD 80GB drive as well. I installed an Acer Labs Inc. PCI USB 2.0 card on my
Compaq Presario to enable using the max. transfer speeds that it is supposed
to provide. The only way I can get the drive to be recognized in Device
Manager and show up in "MY COMPUTER" screen is to click on "USB MASS
STORGE" with the yellow warning sign, click on "UNINSTALL", remove the USB
cable from the back of the WD Ext. Drive for a few minutes. Plug it in again
and watch the lower right corner or screen indicate that its found the device
and the drives and is installing it. Then its working until the next re-boot
at least. A real nuicance to say the least and it creates some doubt about
your data getting stored on the drives properly. I've had no help in my
contacting Western Digital, Acer Labs Inc., Compaq or Microsoft. Microsoft
has had couple of KB articles posted about it but only refering to a low
power supply to the USB hub and having WIN XP SP1 installed. I have WIN SP2
installed and that supposed to include the SP1 upgrade. The low power
problem is supposed to bring up a warning message if that's a problem and
that hasn't appeared yet. I've tried it connected to the pre-installed UBS
1.0 ports, and then I receive the message that the drive will function
faster connected to a USB 2.0 port and even show the location of the USB 2.0
Acer Labs Inc. port.
I see by the number of posts relating to similar problems that quite a few
others are having various problems with USB. It's apparently not the unique
"PLUG AND PLAY" device and experience that we've been led to believe.
If anyone has an answer or solution I'd be happy to hear from them about it.

I tried your suggestion exactly, but in uninstalling all the items under
USB Serial Bus Controllers, I removed my USB driven printer as well. Not
much of an addtl. problem, just had to insert the CD with the drivers and
re-install. All the other USB devices were re-installed automatically without
having to insert the WIN XP CD. Whether this is the end of my recurrent
problems I'm not certain until I've used the system for a few re-boots etc.
If this is really the answer I will return to this post and indicate the
outcome.
Thanks for the responses I've rec'd. so far.

I have used a Western Digital 80gig as an external USB2.0 HD for several
years.. It has no OS on it, of course, just storage jpegs etc.. You don't
need any drivers or USB control sets from anyone except Microsoft and the
key word is 'enhanced'... Anything NEC you have installed, try uninstalling
them because they are NOT needed...(for USB2.0) XP supplies all you should
need and will indicate something like 'standard enhanced pci to usb
controller' or something like that in the Device manager.. You would think
taht USB 2.0 is USB 2.0 no matter who makes the chip, but I had, at one
time, a cheapo USB2.0 PCI card that had an NEC chip on it and it never
worked right.. I tossed it and bought a Belkin PCI USB card that cost about
$39 but it worked perfectly and WITHOUT installing anyhting that was on the
disc they included.

You could be right about the problem being with the PCI USB card being at
fault.
If my problem continues that may be the next change I try. I've seen other
recommendations for the Belkin product. I may also try running the external
USB drive with only the WIN XP "enhanced" options and uninstall what I have
from Ace Labs Inc. I don't see where there's much to lose as I can
re-install the Acer drivers again if needed. I know I can use the drive
from my USB 1.0 ports without anything except what is provided by Windows, as
that was my initial use of the external drive. But in trying to install the
USB 2.0 Root Hub is where I have run into the problems.
Thanks to all for the response rec'd. so far. Always willing to look at
any others that may be offered.

You can also try disabling power management on the USB hub.
a) Click Start, then right-click My Computer.
b) Click Properties and click the Hardware tab.
c) Click the Device Manager button.
d) Double-click Universal Serial Bus controllers.
e) Right-click USB Root Hub, then click Properties.
f) Click the Power Management tab.
f) De-select the Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power
check box. (Do this for all USB root hubs)
g) Click OK and close Device Manager.

Let us know if this works out.

Thanks for all of the responses I've rec'd. I followed yesterdays
recommendations and was gratified to see that everything seems to be working
together this morning. I'm not certain that it's going to continue that way
until I've had a few more successful starts however. I have tried disabling
power management on all the root hubs previously without solving the
problems. I don't believe its a low power problem as the only USB devices
I'm using have their own power supply. Those are the external drive, an
Imation 120 MB Super Disk Drive and a Lexmark X63 All-in-One
printer/copy/scan fax machine. These are all working properly on USB 1.0
ports.
But if I continue having a problem I'll certainly put the suggestions to
"deselect" the options per Mr. Tibrewals response.
Once I'm certain of a solution that's working I will post another response
here indicating what seems to have been the correct 'fix', for this computer
at least.

As I indicated in earlier responses, if I found a suggestion that worked I
would get back here with that infomation.

I followed the instructions from Abhilashi Tibrewal as indicated below and
have had no further problems with the USB 2.0 installation. The external
drives are online and DataKeeper is backing up my data files to it with no
further error messages. All USB devices show up with no error indications in
Device Manager, all the drives appear on "My Computer " screen correctly.

A problem that plagued me from 2/22/05 has finally been eliminated thanks
to
Mr. Tibrewals suggestions. Good job, keep up the good work!
Thank you. Its been a good learning experience as well.
