USB mass controller

When i insert a media card in the card reader nothing happens. I opened
device manager and the "USB mass controller" says Unknown device, and all my
removable disks icon in MY COMPUTER disappear. Messages that come up are
"no drivers installed", USB root hub 2 ports 1 unknown device, 2 unused port.
I have disconnected my printer and camera USB's. I tried a different media
card and the same thing happens. I have to shut down the computer and
remove the flexible USB cable from the mother board and card reader, reboot
and everything is fine till i plug in the media card again, then i have to go
through the above process.
I don't recall any software,or hardware changes,and scanning for
malware,trojans,viruses doesn't show any issues.
Please help.
Thanks

There's no fix that works for everyone. Usually this happens with external
hard drives. It was explained that when a drive isn't always on Windows gets
confused by the changing drive letters. Use something like TweakUI to assign
that a drive letter further on down the alphabet that nothing is close to
using.
