Here are some known issues with USB and WinXP. Hopefully you'll find
the answer here:

http://usbman.com/WinME USB Guide.htm#Known Issues

There are patches, etc. earlier on the page also.

Earlier i found the message listing the link to General USB troubleshooting
in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=310575

i went there and looked thru the site and uninstalled my USB controllers and
before i could reboot i got the blue screen of death.... so of course i
rebooted

when i came back i was having the same problems getting the USB controller
to install that i had with the devices... could my problem be windows and the
plug and play installer instead of my USB port... i finally have one port
reinstalled... the other is still an unknown usb controller and i dont have
USB 2.0 now

I am having the same problem. All my storage devices have been working okay,
but then I switched on a few days ago and they had stopped working, all I got
was 'the device has malfunctioned' message, when they hadn't. I have many
and they all display this message, yet they all work on other computers. I
read the reply and went to the usbman website, and tried to download the
drivers in service pack 1, but it would not let me as it says it is loaded on
this computer already.

I have tried many websites, but cannot find anything that will help. It
just won't recognise the devices. Any ideas?

There's probably a problem with the USB controllers then. Look in the
Device Manager and see if there are exclamation point icons left of
those controllers. Try repairing their drivers, or roll the drivers back.

Hi Again, well I just un-hibernated my machine, not even re-booted, put in a
flash drive, and now it works again !!!!!!!!!! I did download one patch that
I got from following the usbman, maybe that did the trick. thanks for the
tip. Let's hope it stays working now.
