usb hub question

I have two usb slots on my PC.
I installed a hub into one of them
and connected the scanner that
was using the PC slot to the hub.
Everything worked fine until I tried
to run shut down where everything
seemed to shut down but the PC
wouldn't shut off.

I also cannot boot with the hub
connected with the scanner.

After trying different things, I can
shut off and reboot the machine if I unplug
the scanner from the hub; I have
nothing else connected to it at the
moment, but I will in the future.

Is this the way it should work, or
do I have to do something else?

It's not supposed to work that way, but your details are lacking. Could be a
motherboard issue, could be the OS. What type and age of system? Win98 was
the first OS that had proper USB support. Win95 had it added to it in
OSR2.1....but with a flawed driver model. One thing to remember is that the
USB device support in Win98, 98SE and ME was in it's early stages. There
were only about 100 USB devices tested when implemented by MS in Win98.
Either get a USB 2.0 add in card or upgrade.

I can't upgrade. When I bought the machine
about six years ago, I thought I could have
upgraded to the next version of Windows
but it turned out that it was not large enough
to handle XP.

I am preparing to back everything up and
do a few other things before I get a new
machine.

I can live with plugging/unplugging on the
top of my desk than getting under the desk
to swap connections.

You're in the wrong forum....this is a WinXP group, and you are using Win98SE.

That said, and as Augustus mentioned, you do not supply enough details.

What motherboard/chipset is it, or what brand/model computer is it, with what
processor?

Are the USB ports built into the motherboard, or did you add them later with a USB
card?

If it is an add-in USB card, what chipset?

I have never had any luck at all running a scanner through a hub. If I got
it to work at all it didn't last long and had to re-install the scanner
software with the scanner not hooked up to the hub in the end.

Scanners often seem to be problematic when run through a hub (any hub - I've
tried 3). My own scanner will operate for almost exactly 15 minutes* before
freezing the PC. Diconnecting and rebooting fixes this and it will continue
until next time I forget to pull the scanner USB port out before the 15
minutes is up. Plugging directly into the root hub does not exhibit this
behaviour

*I haven't actually timed it, but I'll bet it's the same time every time. I
have no idea why.

I was able to use the scanner, but I didn't
try it for any length of time.

The other slot is being used by a printer.
If the scanner hangs while I am running it,
I will try switching it with the printer.
Eventually I will have a DSL modem and
some kind of external storage added.
