USB high-speed ??

I have installed a 6-1 Front Panel Card Reader which has a combination of
various cards (CF/SD) which can be read from it including 1x USB Port. I
have connected the USB cable to the extra Usb port on the board.
I realise that every now and then XP informs me that:
"Hi-Speed USB device is plugged into a non Hi-Speed USB hub. Install
Hi-Speed USB host controllers."

My question is :
Is XP not equipped with a USB controller/driver? Or is it a controller for
USB 1.1.
Do I have to look for USB2.0 drivers (assuming that is what is meant by the
Hi-Speed).

thanks.

I believe this means your card reader supports USB 2.0 but that the USB
ports on your motherboard only support USB 1.1.

How old is your motherboard? If you are sure the mobo supports USB 2.0 then
you may need to download the Microsoft USB 2.0 drivers. This is because
support for USB 2.0 was only provided for the first time with Win XP SP1
(and even then it depends on how you got to SP1).

Read both of these articles before you do anything:

Universal Serial Bus 2.0 Support in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;312370&FR=1&PA=1&SD=HSCH

INFO: Availability of USB 2.0 Support in Windows XP SP1
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;329632&FR=1&PA=1&SD=HSCH

If your motherboard hardware does not support USB 2.0 then you can buy a PCI
card that has 4 external ports and one or two internal ports. Get one that
uses the NEC chip (I think most do).

Actually, I think I have to check if my board supports USB 2.0 too because,
I have always used this USB pendrive which is 1.1 and my ADSL modem (which
is also USB I guess also 1.1) have never given any signals.
But then isn't USB 2.0 downward compatible then ? Assuming my board (MSI
6340M) doesn't support USB 2.0, won't I still run the card at 1.1 speed?

thanks.

Yes, it will still run - The message is just informational, to let you
know a HighSpeed device is being used in a FullSpeed channel.

USB 2.0 drivers do not come with XP they come with SP1! If you
have USB2.0 then it will install the drivers. :)
