USB headset killed my sound

This is a general audio problem this group seemed to be the closest to that...

XP Home, SP2, all up to date.

I got a Cyber Acoustics AD-840 USB headset. Plugged it in, works fine, but
now I can't get my speakers to work (even with the headset unplugged)

I checked the Sound and Audio Devices defaults and mutes/levels, I've
reisntalled the sound card software and drivers (SB Live 5.1), removed the
card and software then moved the card to a new slot and reinstalled. I
uninstalled the USB devices

in the device manager, and let them reinstall. I used system restore to
roll back to an earlier time. I even disabled USB altogether in the BIOS,
and mucked around in the registry removing any reference to USB audio. None
of that has restored the sound to my speakers (though the headset still
works).

Anyone have any ideas of somewhere else to mess around so I don't have to
reformat?

I attached headphones and had no sound to speakers until I shut down the
system and brought it back up. It seems that after I unplug headphones I
have to retstart system. I am wanting to be able to use speakers and
headphones and not have to restart system between use of the two. Any ideas?
Does it have something to do with settings? Or is it just not possible? RT
