USB drives not showing up

I cloned my installation of WinXP Pro to a new computer, then did an
in-place install of XP to make sure it worked with the new processor.
Everything is fine, except this: If I plug in a USB "thumb" drive, I can
hear the typical USB sound, and (the first time) XP acknowledges the new
device and installs it, and reports it as ready to use--but it never
shows up in the drive list! So if I go into Disk Management, I can see
the drive, and I can give it a drive letter; but it still won't show up
in the drive list. I *can* access the drive via Disk Management, by
right-clicking and choosing "Open"; but if I choose "Explore" instead,
it does not show up. And if I take it out and put it back in, it again
does not have a drive letter assigned in Disk Management. Same is true
for cards that I put in the card reader slots in the front of the
computer--they don't show up as they're supposed to. Any ideas? Help!!!!

For the record: I found the answer elsewhere. It turned out to be
related to a failed Daemon Tools installation. DT was installed on the
previous machine; when I cloned the HD, on the new machine the DT
installation failed, but left behind some files which caused the
problem. Specifically, I removed the files secdrv.sys, sptd.sys, and
sptd1165.sys from the Windows\System32\drivers folder. All was well
after a restart! - JR
