usb drives, hardware manager cannot install

have new dell system running windows xp media version 2. If I plug any
external usb unit like camera, pen drive, mp3 player. System says it detected
new hardware but unable to install. I have no driver files for these items as
not needed!!
Any idea please. On old system just use to plug into usb port and system saw
device without any problem,....

What did Dell say was the problem?
