USB Drivers

I have Windows XP Pro SP3 on my computer. I also have 3 external drives
connected with USB to IDE cables. I used to be able to use these drives with
no problem, but I have had to format my HDD and reinstall Windows about 6
times now. These drives are no longer visible in My Computer. When I go to
Device Manager it shows the 3 drives with a yellow exclamation point. I have
attempted to reinstall these drivers, using my Windows disk, to no avail. The
cables came without drivers, stating that Windows had the drivers already.
Can anyone help me to install the needed drivers or where I may be able to
find them?

What type of drive are they 3.5" or 2.5"? Do these ext drives have their
own power source?

If it's a yellow exclamation mark '!' then it could just be a case of right
clicking it and selecting update driver, or you could try uninstalling it
first, remove ext HDD, restart computer, plug ext HDD back in, XP should
install the drivers required automatically. You may get a warning that
Windows needs to reboot for them to take effect so watch for that and don't
be too eager to access the drives if the system suddenly discovers them.

They are 3.5" drives and they have a power supply connected to them. I have
tried updating the drivers, uninstalling them, restarting Windows with them
unplugged then plugging them in. I have even formatted the HDD, reinstalled
Windows with them unplugged. I have done evrything I know of to reinstall
these drivers and nothing has worked.

Start>Control Panel>Admin tools>Computer Management>Disk Management

Are they recognised in there?

I would take one of the drives out of the case and connect it up inside your
pc case as a slave and see if windows recognizes it and gives it a drive
letter. Another question that came to mind, when you formatted your hard
drive did you format using FAT32 or NTFS? What file format are the Ext
HDD's?

You mention that you formatted and reinstalled XP. Did you also reinstall
the motherboard drivers? This is a necessary step.

I have several Removable drives, but when I check the properties they are all
for my different card readers. The external drives are not shown in Disk
Management. Thanks anyway though.

These drives all came out of my case, they were recognized and had drive
letters. They all presently contain data I would like to have access to. They
are all FAT32 converted to NTFS. I appreciate the effort you put into this.
Thanx {:)

You will have to explain what you did a little better. I didn't find a way to
install drivers in Device Manager. I did a Refresh, Rescan Disks and Show
Hidden Devices. Nada. I look forward to hearing more from you. Thanx

I did immediately install all of the drivers on the MB CD. Also installed the
drivers for my video card.

Can you connect one of them up as a slave again and open disk management.
Obviously it will be given a drive letter [I hate to presume but,]

Right click the drive and select 'Mark Partition as Active', then open up My
Computer and check if the drive can be seen. If so disconnect it, put it
back in it's enclosure, connect it via the usb cable and see if it is now
recognized.

Of course if you want to view any data on those drives you can by clicking
on Explore but our quest is to be able to get the system to see the drives
either through My Computer or Windows Explorer.

Have you even tried to right-click or double-click any devices in Device Manager?

Click on the "Don't search,I will choose the driver to install"
When the listed drivers show up,that you're talking about, click on the "Have Disk"
button & then browse to the location that you saved the driver files.

Most driver downloads have a *setup* file amongst the files, that will install it for
you. I would,also check there.

Also remember that when you remove a drive from your computer you need to
re-install the jumpers on the drive properly...the drive was a SLAVE in the
pc... now when you install it in a usb box you need to install the jumpers as
a MASTER...It will be recognize by the pc even if its not formated...

The jumper settings can vary with brands of cases and drives. I find that
with WD drives in the cases I have, using the Master jumper causes the
drive to not be recognised. *removing* the jumpers works.

Hi Patrick,

Did you ever get this problem resolved?
I too have Windows XP (SP!3). Except my USB Device is an External HDD.
Like you, my USB Drive worked fine when I got it. I am not too sure of what
I did but, now it only shows up in Universal Serial Bus Controllers as an
Unknown Device.

I have tried it on my other computer, which is a Laptop running on Windows
XP Pro. (SP3). It works fine on it. It shows up as an External disk drive,
and a USB Mass Storage Device.

Does anyoine know what else I can try. I too have tried uninstalling,
reinstalling, and nothing seems to work?
