I have a PC running XP-Home which is having (among other
things) three main problems:

(1) When I plug a USB device in (eg memory stick or
broadband modem) the device is unrecognised. I have tried
the devices on three other XP machines, (and the memory
stick in a Win 98 PC) and all is well.

(2) When the m/c visits the Windows update site, it
shows "Software update incomplete" as discussed in MS K/B
Article 319585. I have found (and deleted) copies of the
file as recommended the the article to no avail.

(3) Norton antivirus 2003 is installed on the m/c but will
not load. I have run the pre-install virus check from
Norton System Works 2004 CD, and this found no problems.

All I want to do initially is to get to the Windows update
site. Can anyone suggest what (apart from consuming a
large glass of beer) I should try next!

(When logging on to the web using narrow-band, connections
are short-lived and terminate un-predictably.)

Regards, and thanks in advance.....

Hi Rob,

1) Drink the beer.

2) Go to: http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/ and download stinger.

3) Restart in Safe mode by hitting F8 when the system boots.

4) Crack another brew, drink it while you run stinger in safe mode.

5) Restart normally, see if this helps.
