usb device

on connecting a 512mb mp3 player i get the following message from windows.usb
device not recognized.one of the usb devices attached to this computer has
malfunctioned,and windows does not recognize it.is there any thing that i can
do to get it up and running.the mp3 player is from a company called EASYTECH

Does your PC have USB 2.0 capability or just 1(.1) ? Are you plugging
the device into a direct socket or through some kind of extension Hub ?
USB hubs have power limitations, depending on what other USB devices
are connected you may be exceeding the 500 mA limit. There are also
bandwidth limitations and many USB audio devices require a composite
driver that uses a good bit of bandwidth.
If you check Device Manager, (Click View - tic/check "Show Hidden
Devices") does a "Other" category appear ? - this is where XP places
devices that it cannot identify and subsequently load drivers for ?
