USB Flash Drives not recognising

Hi All

I wonder if there's someone that could help me with this problem:

I have a PC running Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 2. The USB
scanner works fine, but USB flash drives that are plugged in says the
following:
"USB Device not Recognized. One of the USB devices attached to this
computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it"

In Device Manager under Universal Serial Bus controllers it's listed as
"Unknown Device".

I have tried reinstalling Windows XP Service Pack 2, but that didn't help.

Any help would greatly be appreciated.

Thanks!

Edward

Odds are the USB drive is faulty. Contact the manufacturer for support to
verify.

Flash drives do not require an additional drivers to be installed. You need
to remove each "Unknown Device" from Device Manager. It seem that the USB
ports are not providing enough power for the scanner to be connected at the
same time as the USB flash drives. A power USB hub may help.

Hey All

Thanks for your help. I removed the scanner that is working and plugged in
a flash drive in that port - still no success. The only USB device connected
was the flash drive. The flash drive does however work on other computers.

I also tried uninstalling the Unknown Device in Device Manager, but that
didn't help either.

OK, found the solution:

Unplug all USB devices out of the PC
then shutdown and turn off the power
Unplug the computer's power cord from the wall.
Leave the computer off for 30 mins
Turn the computer back on and everything will work again. :)

Hope this helps someone else out there....

Thanks for that. I was beginning to lose hope. How crazy is that. I think
it was my usb mouse. Luckily I had a ps2 one kicking about. by the way my
trick is to shut down, unplug the lead, press the start button with the lead
out and then plug in and start. I think it must discharge the capacitors or
something cos it saves waiting.
Thanks again,
Richard.
