USB Device Troubleshooting

While trying to troubleshoot my printer (connected through USB port), I went
into "device manager" and uninstalled my USB drivers, then rebooted to have
windows automatically reinstall the USB drivers.

I think the problem was that I hadn't disconnected the printer from the USB
port before uninstalling the USB driver. Now after reinstalling, the USB
port no longer recognizes my printer--indicating there are no drivers for
this "unknown" device. The CD for the printer will not install until the
printer is properly connected--which I am unable to do, due to the USB
problem.

Is there any way to fix this?

You should have, open device mgr.,scroll to the usb controller,R.click on it,
then select, update drivers. The updated usb drivers for 2.0 are installed with
SP1,but not activated till you update the controller. You can still do
this,then
go to control panel, add new hardware, install the printer.

Thanks for the quick reply. Is SP1 one of the windows update service packets
or something? I tried updating the usb drivers and the wizard finished up
and indicated the drivers were already up-to-date.

I still went ahead and tried to install the printer manually, but the
wizard still reaches a point where I must connect the printer to proceed any
further. Since the USB still is not recognizing the device, I am unable to
proceed past this point.

Any other ideas?

Yes, SP1 is the FIRST service pak for XP and as the man said, it has the USB
2.0 support you need. I have an HP USB printer and had a problem with the
stuff on the install disc they sent, so I let XP 'find' the USB 2.0 stuff
first, unplugged the printer ran HPs install disc and waited until the
install disc reached the point of telling me to connect it, then finished
the install, which of course, was mostly the Program that HP provided.. You
didn't say yours was an HP, but the way to install it all might be less
complicated if you try this method. I have not found any reason to mess with
any USB 2.0 stuff from a 3rd party, (i have tossed most discs from them) XP
does a great job of supplying all that stuff..
