USB Device Not Reconized

I really hope someone can help me out...

I bought a Playstation Portable and I'm trying to put photos on it, but when
i plug in my USB to my PC it says "USB Device Not Reconized"? I e-mailed
Playstation for help and this is the reply I received... and I'm still lost??

The PSP(TM) portable entertainment system can connect to a computer using a
USB connection because
it can be accessed as a standard USB Mass Storage device. The computer must
have an operating system
that supports USB Mass Storage devices. This includes Windows XP
Home/Professional, Mac OS X, and
others. When using operating systems that do not come with support for USB
Mass Storage devices,
you may need to download additional software or drivers to enable support
for these devices. We
recommend contacting the manufacturer of your computer or operating system
(i.e. Microsoft, Apple,
etc.) for additional assistance.

Sony Computer Entertainment America, Inc. (SCEA) does not require a
proprietary driver for the PSP
system to be recognized by your computer. If your operating system does not
recognize the PSP
system, you will need to download a standard USB Mass Storage device driver
that is appropriate to
your particular operating system. Although the PSP system can be used as a
USB Mass Storage device,
device drivers for this class of peripherals are not part of SCEA's product
line; please consult
with the manufacturer of your operating system for the proper USB driver
download.

I've found that sometimes when I connect a USB device to a port on my PC it
will say Device Unrecognised, but plug it into another port and looky looky,
it works fine, try plugging it directly into the back ports on your
tower/case, rather than any front ports or a USB hub, failing that, email
Sony back and say you ahve all the required operating systems and see what
they say

This is a bit wild, but anyway...
On another computer I had, a virus (or the virus scanner -.-) deleted a file
called WININET.DLL. Without this file, the computer could not install or
recognise any internal or external hardware plugged into it that wasn't
already installed. Check if the file exists, in the folder
C:\Windows\system32. If it does, then sorry, can't help you any further.

Silly question perhaps, but no-one's been inside the box tinkering and may
have accidently loosened wires from the front USB connectors or anything? Or
can you try plugging it into another machine (laptop or something?) and see
if it fails to recognise there, if that happens, I'd be on the phone to Sony
with a complaint .... or you could send it my way, I haven't got a PSP yet!

If I were you I'd try unplugging some of your usb items and see if your
memory stick works. I had to unplug my printer for my mp3 player to be
recognized by my computer. Your problem sounds very similar to my
experience. If the memory stick works with some things unplugged you may
want to get a powered usb hub. That's what finally worked for me.
