a message pops up everytime i connect my lite-on it cd-rw
external drive. (model LXR-40122A). says sub device not
recognized. Shows up under unknown device. how do i fix
this? windows xp is suppose to put it under a mass
storage device.

Windows is supposed to automatically recognize it, but you may need to
install the software/drivers that came with it if possible. I have a
CD-RW drive based off that (TDK, but made by LiteOn) that looks similar
and probably is just a rebadged version and Windows XP SP1 did not have
the drivers automatically, but I inserted the CD it came with and it
found the proper drivers on there. It's worth a shot ;)
