USB Device Not Recognized

R

Rayne

We just installed a new motherboard and a processor in my
computer and now none I can't connect anything into the
Usb ports without getting this error that says:

One of the USB devices attached to the computer has
malfunctioned and windos does not recognize it.

I tried reintalling the drivers and it says there is still
no drivers for the usb ports..

You're supposssed to do a repair install after putting in a new mobo.
This will let XP know of all the new resources on the new mobo.

So if I understand correctly that would be...

Replace mobo (perhaps leave HD disconnected for a moment)
Boot to bios
Change bios to put CD first in boot sequence
Power off
Reconnect HD
Insert WinXP CD
Power up
Boot from CD
Choose repair install
Some time later when it's all working
Boot into to bios and put boot order back.

or did I miss anything?

Don't bother with the hard drive. Here's what to do.

1. Replace the motherboard, cpu, or any other hardware you want.
2. Boot from the cd
3. Do a repair install.

That's it. :) Very simple. If you need to go into the BIOS to change the
boot order, you can do that anytime without disconnecting the hard drive. I
would suggest keeping the boot order like this:

1. Floppy Drive
2. CD Drive
3. Hard Drive.

No need to change it, and it would make any future repair installs go that
much quicker.

I thought the normal boot order was floppy then HD then CD. Is it possible
to force boot from CD? How do you stop the old copy of XP on the HD booting
first? Thats why I suggested disconnecting the HD - to be sure the old modo
drivers don't get a look in.

The default boot order depends on the motherboard manufacturer, but it can
be easily changed in the BIOS. My default settings was

1. Hard Drive
2. Floppy

I switched it to:

1. USB Floppy
2. CD-ROM
3. Hard Drive

That way, it will force the computer to boot from a floppy or a cd-rom
before it tries the hard drive. Once the recovery console starts, it won't
touch the hard drive until you actually start the repair install.

My recommendation is *not* to keep the floppy first in the boot
order. The problem is that one common kind of virus is a boot
sector virus on a diskette. If you put a diskette infected with
such a virus in the drive while Windows is running, nothing will
happen. But if you accidentally leave such a diskette in the
drive when you shut down the computer, you will boot from it and
get infected when you next start tye computer.

Putting the floppy drive *last* in the boot order protects you
against this. If you ever need to boot from a floppy, you can
always change the boot order temporarily then.

Do the USB ports show up as configured and working correctly in
Device Manager?.
Also, if you are using front USB ports that connect to a set of
headers on the Mother Board via a pair of cables, double check with
the manual that you have the pinout correct
