USB device not recognized (mouse)

Hello :)

Several weeks ago, I got tired of the touchpad on my (Toshiba Satellite)
WinXP Pro laptop and got a Micro Innovations optical USB mouse. It works
great except for one snag.

Sometimes when I right click and only when I right click, the click does not
register in whatever program I'm using and the light lighting the mouse's
wheel flicker out for 0.5 to 4 seconds, during which my laptop's HD chatters
as HD's usually do and nothing responds to mouse input.

If the mouse is moved duting this time, when the light comes back on, the
cursor jumps from where it was when the light went out to where it would have
moved to smoothly had the snag not happened.

Once in awhile, the light never comes back on and this error message shows
in a bubble coming from a USB symbol that appears in the taskbar.

"USB device not recognized. One of the USB devices attached to this
computer has malfunctioned and Windows does not recognize it. Click this
message for assistance in solving this problem."

When that happens, I have to unplug the mouse for a few seconds and plug it
back in to get it to work again. I talked with Micro Innovations support on
the phone and they were helpful, even e-mailing me a driver while I was on
the phone with them, but the problem keeps happening, so I didn't reinstall
the driver after I had my HD wiped for other reasons. It appears that
there's some sort of conflict between the mouse and WinXP. Nothing needed to
be installed to use the mouse, just plug 'n' play. Anyone got any idea of
what the problem might be?

Thanx in advance :)
