USB detects everything except MP3 player

I bought & installed an MP3 player with no problems but at the end of the
procedure after rebooting (and yes I "safely removed hardware" in the system
tray) the usb port failed to recognize anything was plugged in. I tried
everything, checking the ports (I have a wireless LAN plugged into the other
port; it works in both) and they're fine, I uninstalled & reinstalled,
everything. I returned the player and purchased a new one and yet again
there are no traces of its regonition in this computer. I even performed a
system restore to days before the purchase of the first player (remember, the
usb port detected it that first time) but it's made no difference.

Reading all the posts I gather it could do with the fact my two ports are
1.1 and that I installed a 2.0 flash device. But everyone says it shouldn't
matter and should work. I also read a post advising that "if your network
drives aremapped to the same driveletters that are being used by your usb
devicees, you won't be able to see the usb devices and to assign another
drive letter to the device, then unmap all network drives & then plug the
device back in." How does a clueless person like me reassign drive letters?

I have a feeling my registry may be to blame. Any ideas? Will I ever be
able to install one of these &%# players? How do I reassign drive letters (I
already have a removable drive but it's a zip drive)

Please help, I'm sooooo lost!!!!!

USB 2.0 devices are generally not backwards compatible with USB 1.1 ports.
You can buy a PCI USB 2.0 adapter fairly cheaply. Just remember that you
will need the USB 2.0 drivers as well.
