Can I use my USB cable to connect two machines via a USB
hub? I can do so with my 1394 cables but the other
machine we own doesn't have 1394.

A USB hub isn't a networking device, and it isn't possible to network
two computers using standard USB cables.

Here are two ways to use USB for networking:

1. Get a pair of USB Ethernet adapters and connect them just like
Ethernet adapters that mount inside a computer. Connecting two
computers directly, without a hub, switch, or router, requires a
specially wired crossover cable.

2. Get a USB-to-USB cable, with added circuitry, that can connect two
computers directly. Here are some sites for more information:
