usb audio device

Hi,

I'm trying to install a usb midi keyboard to my Windows XP.
It should recognise "USB Audio Device" by just plugging the device
into USB port, but all I get is "Unknown device". I have Service Pack 2.
Has my OS something wrong or what I'm doing wrong?

You need to supply XP with a driver. All USB devices have a
unique identifier string, called a VID. When XP enumerates
a device it reads that string and matches it with a .Inf that has
the driver setup information. If XP has no data about a VID
then it assigns it as Unknown device.

Check the vendor web site & get the appropriate driver package.

Thanks for your advice. I got the driver for my m-audio keystation
device but when trying to update the driver for the unknown usb device, it
doesn't
recognise the driver compatible for the device.
Is this an OS problem or is it the vendor problem?

No, it's a little more complicated. In a case like this you have to
"Force" the driver association. You can do it a couple of ways.
One Right Click the .Inf file that comes with the driver package.
Choose Install from the context menu. Then uninstall the device
shown as unknown from under the USB category & reboot.
-or-
Right Click the Device in Device Manager, Take Update Driver
but don't automatically search. Chose the manual & I'll choose
the driver and then direct it to your extracted driver location. It
should find the .Inf and present the appropriate driver description
in the details box.
