USB 2 problem

Guest

I have developed a problem with my USB 2 devices. PC will recognise devices
as
USB 1.1 but as soon as I load USB 2 drivers (from m/board CD) they're not
recognised. I have even reformatted Hard drive and checked BIOS settings
(USB 2 enabled)?

Anyone else had a similar problem and perhaps have an answer?

Thanks for reading.

Specs:
Win XP Professional
2.4g processor
512ram
250GB Hard Drive

You should go to the OEM site for the mobo and update to the latest USB
drivers they have.. My Intel boards driver CD had just the basic USB 1.1
driver or it was corrupted, can't remember.. I do, however, remember I had
USB 2.0 problems until I updated the drivers online..

You shouldn't need to load any drivers. As long as you have SP1 or higher
USB 2.0 support is built into Windows. Make sure you have the latest chipset
drivers for your motherboard and SP1 or higher and USB 2.0 should work. Some
chipsets, SIS in particular, are known to have problems with USB 2.0. What
chipset does your motherboard use? Another common cause of problems is
non-compliant cables. Make sure you are using a good quality cable labelled
for use with USB 2.0.

Thank you both for replying to my post. These problems have 'appeared' since
I returned from holiday. Prior to that the USB 2 devices worked perfectly??
That's why it's odd they don't want to know now?

What chipset does your motherboard use? What is the model number of the
devices you are having problems with? Is it all USB 2.0 devices or just some
particular devices?

Chipset in book is... SiS 651 & SiS 962L
Devices are 2 x Lacie 250GB external Hard Drives both supplied with USB 2
cables. Both working fine @ USB 2 speed prior to my holiday? :-(
Now when I connect Lacie drives to USB ports it says Hi Speed device plugged
into Lo Speed port.

It looks like a replacement M/Board might be the less-stressful option right
now!
Thanks for your help so far. It's appreciated.

I don't know what caused the problem but I have had similar problems with
motherboards using that chipset. If you have a mix of USB lo speed and high
speed divices it seems to have many problems. There are some registry hacks
you can try but I haven't had much luck with them. The problem is usually
solved if you add a PCI USB 2.0 card. This is a much cheaper and easier
solution than a new motherboard :)

Thanks Kerry a card sounds a much cheaper option (fingers a few coins in his
pocket!!) ;-)) That is also an interesting link you gave too. Many thanks for
your help and guidance, I appreciate it very much and hope all your troubles
are not 'little' usb 2 one's!!! :)

Hope you had a nice holiday.. Like most people I assume you shut down the
computer, if not unplugging it along with the coffee/tea maker.. Especially
if you were going away for a long holiday.. It might possibly be a weakening
CMOS battery, an even cheaper alternative, for the heck of it, may be worth a
check of it..
Cheers..

many 'tight fisted' like me around.. :)) BTW the holiday was great, 56 days
in The Algarve... ;-))
