USB 2.0 removable drive problem

J

Jerome Cates

I have a 20 GB removable Hard drive with USB 2.0.
I have connected this drive to many computers.
Results are mixed: Newish PC's run it without difficulty on USB2.0.
Some PC's require me to connect the second "power only" USB connector to
work
My Laptop simply can't run it (only one USB 1.0 port)
However my home should run it fine but doesn't.
Mainboard has USB 2.0 but my USB drive starts and stops over and over. It
eventually settles on a USB 1.0 connection telling me that this drive could
run faster on a USB 2.0 connection. However it is connected to one!

Any suggestions most welcome.

Sounds like a power drain problem. You could try running it through a
powered hub. I've had this with external USB-connected hard drives
often.
