USB 2.0 not working for me - Please Help!

Hey guys,

I need help, I hope someone can help me.

I bought a new hard disk and put it with a hard disk enclosure (USB
2.0) and also bought a USB 2.0 PCI card.

There doesn't seem to be any problem except that the hard disl doesn't
appear in My Computer at all.

If I unplug, then replug I get the message "HI-SPEED USB Device
Plugged into a non-HI-Speed USB Hub".

I've searched the web for solutions. Firstly it suggested I download
XP SP1 which apparently solves the problem. It didn't.

Then, I went through the Windows trouble shooter. Unplugged,
replugged, uninstalled, installed, swapped ports, etc. Still nothing.

Then, I uninstalled all USB devices, hubs, controllers, devices, etc.
and rebooted and watched them all reinstall. Still nothing.

For your information, this is how device manager shows it:

USB 2.0 is installed, according to Device Manager. But
has the HD been partitioned and formatted? It will not
appear in My Computer until this has been done although
the USB external HD enclosure (with HD) is identified
as an USB Mass Storage Device.

You can try removing all Root Hubs and reboot. XP should re-detect then and
re-install them correctly.

I have the same situation.

The remove and reinstall scenario just doesn't solve the problem.

After installing SP1 for XP USB 2.0 ports on my Adaptec USB2connect 4000
just don't function. Remove SP1 and they work.

I tried a clean install of XP in a partition. USB2 ports function. Add SP1
and bang they fail. A slight variation is noted whether the lasted Adaptec
or Microsoft drivers are used.

I have disabled the two USB 1.1 ports on my 1998 vintage motherboard - no
change noted.

It is great that the driver uninstall/install scenario seems to work for
some people. But having watched these postings for several months I am
convinced there is a class of people for which it doesn't work.

Yes, this was exactly the problem. In all my stressing about drivers,
SP1 etc, it completely escaped my mind to format the damn disk!

So, thanks to GhostRider for suggesting it.

You should only get that message if the hard drive is physically plugged
into a non USB 2.0 port. Be sure to plug it into a port physically on the
USB 2.0 PCI card port that you installed into the system. Then you should no
longer get these messages.
