USB 2.0 is a goner

USB 2.0 devices have hit the wall big time.

Somewhere along the line recently, Microsoft has released a bugfix (more
likely a bug) that stops any USB 2.0 devices (or USB 1.1 devices on a USB 2.0
controller) from working correctly.

Try it for yourself, update your operating system to the latest patches and
all Microsoft Update updates on offer, reboot then plug in your reliable
device such as your thumb drive and your external USB Hard drive.

The statistics shown below are my experiences, the technical people I work
with and the clients that I support. Each instance is on XP Service Pack 2
with the latest patches installed.

Kaput!
"USB Device not recognised" (15 reported instances from individual clients)
"Unknown Device" (15 reported instances from individual clients)
"USB Device has exceeded the power usage" (8 reported instances from
individual clients)
"Delayed write failed (only 1 reported instance of this error)

Now my question's are......Is there a problem? Is there an answer? If this
is patch related (which my tech intuition is screaming to me) then how the
hell did it pass the Windows High Quality Labs? How did it get released to
the public.

I am fuming about this as there is NO FIX available on the internet.

It is not a hardware vendor problem as it has always worked fine until about
3 - 4 weeks ago. It is not platform specific and the only common thread is XP
SP2 and latest updates.

An article in the MS Knowledge Base suggests "buy a powered USB hub"

Why would a perfectly good device suddenly need power when it has been
working correctly day in day out?

So the question I pose to Bill & Friends is... Is USB 2.0 a goner???

I haven't seen this problem personally or with any customers. Is there a
common factor with the failing computers? Do they all have the same device
installed, eg. same USB printer, card reader, whatever?

Works fine for me. All the latest updates, USB 2.0 works flawlessly. Thumb
drive works fine.

No common factor I have found other than SP2 (XP) and SP1 (Server 2003)

Regional Settings are all set to English Australia, usually set to defaults
for Power Management.

All seem to be using the Intel PCI to USB Universal Host Controller (even
the AMD machines I have worked with)

I have tried changing from the enhanced mode driver to the MS standard and
still to no avail.

The error I receive is something along the lines of "USB Device Not
Recognized" and then under USB Controllers in Device Mgr you see Unknown
Device and it will not reset itself.

Very very frustrating.

I haven't noticed any more posts than normal regarding USB here or in other
newsgroups. If it was a Windows update usually there would be a flurry of
posts immediately after the update. It could still be an update but only in
certain relatively uncommon situtations. The only solution I can think of is
take a broken machine and wipe it out. Reinstall Windows. Start adding in
drivers and updates one at a time until it breaks again. Time consuming but
probably necessary to find the cause.

In short, you are mistaken. Take a good look at your system. In this case,
neither Microsoft nor USB 2.0 are at fault.

Granted, I see where you are heading with this and I fully agree with your
logic.

The problem is happening on multiple different hardware platforms.

I even have a Server 2003 running on a really old Compaq server with a USB
2.0 card in it. It happens on this as well.

The exact error is as follows:
***
One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and
Windows does not recognize it.

Unknown Device
***

I have tried this on multiple platforms and multiple devices, thumb drive
straight out of the box, new and also formatted USB HDD.

This has only started happening to myself and people I know in the last few
weeks. Those I spoke to only admitted it as a problem when I asked if they
had come across the error recently. 9/10 said yes.

I've troubleshooted tougher cookies than this before, I've installed all the
latest whizz bang updates and also rebuilt my computer/s from scratch and
still to no avail.

I am buggered as to what is going on, all I want is a fix...the sooner
someone comes up with one the better...uninstalling the USB Controller in
device manager is not a fix every time you experience it. Turning off the
computer every time is not a fix.

Something HAS changed but no one has flagged it until recently. Search on
google for USB 2.0 problems and you will see a spate of issues people are
experiencing, all with the same issue.

People, this is not an isolated incident.

This is not only affecting me.

There are many other tech's I have spoken to regarding this and they are
experiencing the same problem. They are also running multiple different
hardware platforms.

There is NO COMMON FACTOR other than USB 2.0 and SP2.

Those of you around before SP2 would remember a pain in the neck that
required a hotfix for USB to work correctly...well it's back and whether it
is the same issue or not I do not know, but the symptoms are the same.

I tried searching both Google and Google groups and don't see anything out
of the ordinary. There usually quite a few people posting with USB problems.
Obviously you are experiencing the problem. As it's not a common problem and
hard to pinpoint the cause I don't see any shortcuts for troubleshooting.
SP2 definately changed the way USB works. I have had problems with older
devices causing BSODs after installing SP2. The only cure was a firmware
update or quit using the device. Good luck. Let us know if you find the
solution.

Strange. I have yet to hear any USB complaints on this issue (other than
yours), and I am in daily contact with a large number of people who use
modern PCs running Windows XP under SP2. My own personal network of 3
desktops and 1 laptop have had no problems whatsoever with USB 2.0, and they
all use Windows XP with SP2 and all Microsoft updates installed.

Have you tried doing a System Restore?

Have you installed new software or new hardware recently?

Then... may be you all have some malware?

I update many computers on a daily basis (as a service technician), and I
have not once witnessed the problem you are reporting.

I suspect your issue lies with some other problem that is exacerbated by the
patch.

You should never assume that anything that happens on a single machine
constitutes a bug. or that anyone else other than yourself is having it.

Never heard about an issue about USB2 and SP2.

You could try a complete USB device clearing by
Microsoft devcon and the RenewUSB.bat from

Backup the system before...
