USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller is not installed on installing Windows XP Pro + Windows XP SP1

Hello,

I have recently bought a Samsung laptop which has USB 2 ports and
on which was installed Windows XP Home and USB 2.0 Enhanced Host
Controller (manufacturer install).

Wishing to have Windows XP Pro instead, I have formatted the disc
and installed Windows XP Pro and Windows XP SP1 (in fact using windows
update).

But I no longer have "Intel(r) 82801DB/DBM USB 2.0 Enhanced Host
Controller - 24CD" enhanced controller in the device manager (n.b. : I
had it in the manufacturer install); I only have the Universal Host
Controller.

From what I have read in previous postings, having only Universal
Host Controller and not USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller means that I
don't have the USB 2.0 controllers installed.

Is that true ? If so, how should I proceed to install the USB 2.0
enhanced controller ? Has anyone already come upon that problem ?

thanks for reading me so far, thanks for your answers :)

I have USB2.0 but SP1 did not find them. I had to manually load the
drivers from SP1 into my XP. Then everything worked fine. :)

Start by installing SP1 (XP doesn't have USB2 drivers built in)

If this doesn't work post back!

Try the Samsung web site for USB 2.0 drivers. The following is an example:

http://tinyurl.com/otif

On that web page you will find USB 2.0 driver software. I have no idea what
model Samsung you have and the page I referenced may or may not be your
model. This was just provided as an example of what you can find on the
Samsung site.

Good luck.....

Thanks so much for the tip :)

Do you know what I should be looking for in SP1 in order to load
the USB2.0 drivers ?

There is a catch here. XP drivers for USB 2.0 only came in with SP1.
And installing SP1 will not update drivers for USB 2.0 which are not
already there. Normally the way is to install on initial XP the drivers
that came with the card and *then* install SP1, but you may well not
have been provided with the drivers as a separate item.

What I would try is the ones that are available for Win2000, which
appear to be the same as the ones for SP1. Go to Windows Update, click
Windows Update Catalog on the left (may need to set it available in the
'Personalise' first_/ Take the Drivers option, then Other devices, USB
etc at the bottom then select Microsoft Corporation and Windows 2000
Pro, and enter USB in the 'Contains' box. The first item offered will
be the USB 2.0 drivers. Add to basket, download and run. If it does
not do a correct install, it should at least expand the files to a
folder (probably in Temp) and you can point New Hardware - other devices
at the .inf file

Hello,

Thanks for all your replies guys :)

In fact while trying to update once more one of the USB devices,
the USB 2 Enhanced controller got installed as well. I don't know
exactly what I did to get that or perhaps I haven't completed (and
updated) properly the install last time.

Thanks ;)
