USB 2.0 ands MP3

Im looking to buy an MP3 player, but I'm worried that it may require a USB
2.0, and I have windows service pack 2 and have no idea how to get USB 2.0.
Please help!

You need to find out if your PC is equipped with USB v2.0 ports.
If not, any MP3 player should work with v1.0 ports, but the data transfer
will be a lot slower.

Can you tell us the make/model/type of PC you have?

SP2 supports USB2. You need to make sure that your USB ports are USB2: look
in device manager if they are called enhanced USB. USB2 is backward
compatible with USB 1.1, so if your ports are not USB2 your mp3 player will
connect with limited performances. You can also consider buying a PCI USB2
adapter.

Im not 100% sure, but i know its a Dell desktop, dimension 4300, intel
pentium 4 processor with windows xp.

To save you reading it... it simply states you have some USB ports... not
the version (i.e. speed).
Since it's a fairly old motherboard, and the version isn't stated, I'd
assume that they are version 1.

Personally, in your situation, my next option would be to consider an add-on
card with high speed USB ports on it... such as...

(I don't know where you are in the world.. but £15 for a decent brand of
card is OK in my book)

Perhaps someone else in this group can accurately help you determine what
version of ports you have on your Dell.

If you don't have it as part of your hardware package now, simply go out
and by a $15 USB2 expansion card.

And if that is too much for you, then almost any devise that is USB2 can
run on USB1, just much slower transfer rates.

Hi there
Did you resolve your problem. I have just bought a DVD rewritable and a
Philips USB 2.0 A/V converter only to keep getting the message that this
needs to be plugged into a faster USB port. I have four ports and cannot
believe that all of these are too slow. I have a Dell Optiplex GX150. How
can I find out what size the ports are, how can I maker them quicker?. Can I
test to see if they are running at their optimum speed. I am a comparative
beginner so too much jargon will confuse me. Please help!!!

Look in Device Manager under Universal Serial Bus Controllers. If you see
the word "Enhanced" you've got USB2. If you don't it's only USB1.
You can add a USB2 PCI card assuming you've got a spare PCI slot.

No it does not read enhanced. I have seen in some of the other threads with
similar problems the suggestion of getting an External Hub, I have a digital
camera, Wanadoo Wireless Adapter plus this new A/V Converter so would not
something with several ports be better? Also as I said I am a comparative
beginner and I do not know what a PCI slot is. Sorry! If I went for a Hub
roughly how much would it cost and can you advise on the best (but not the
dearest) of if I go for the USB2 card how much roughly would that cost and
wouls somewhere like Dixon's have it.

An external hub will not help you. You need to add an internal USB 2.0 card.
You can get a four port card for about $30-40.
