When I type google.com in the address field and press go,
Internet Explored does not automatically add
http://www
to the URL and therefore google is not found.
How can I change my settings to ensure
http://www is
automatically added to text added into addresses?
First eliminate any scumware.

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each need to be updated before every use, even when just
downloaded. There's also a lot more to do than just those two programs.
If trying everything at that site does not fix the problem please post back
in the same thread.
Check the below Registry entries vs. yours:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\URL\DefaultPre
fix]
Default="http://"
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\URL\Prefixes]
"ftp"="ftp://"
"gopher"="gopher://"
"home"="http://"
"mosaic"="http://"
"www"="http://"
