URL History in Address Bar

Here's my problem. Maybe some of you have had it as
well.

I have tried several times - over a dozen times, actually -
to clear the "Typed URL" or URL History in my Internet
Explorer browser (version 6.0.2800.1106, to be exact,
running on Windows 2000 Professional). Most of the URLs
disappear from the drop-down list that you see when
clicking the Address Bar or the "Open" option under "File".
However some URLs contine to show up when AutoComplete
remains on. I know this can't be right.

When you go to TOOLS --> INTERNET OPTIONS --> GENERAL, and
click "Clear History", select OK, then go to TOOLS -->
INTERNET OPTIONS --> CONTENT --> AUTOCOMPLETE and
click "Clear Forms", then OK, "Clear Passwords", then OK,
then close all those dialogs with OK, absolutlely NO URLs
from the previous session should show at all when typing
in either the Address Bar or "Open" under "File".
But I still keep having some URLs persist from the
previous session!

Incidentally, I've also tried pressing the DELETE key when
clicking individually on the errant URLs in the drop down
list. That very recommended solution dowsn't seem to be
working either..

Can anyone help?

Autocomplete works off the hidden index.dat file in Windows\History. You'll have to delete it from DOS to reset it:

Boot to DOS (Win9x)
Go to C:\Windows
type -- smartdrv -- <enter> - gets rid of all that disk thrashing
type -- deltree history -- <enter and y to verify> - to clear History
type -- deltree tempor~1 -- <enter and y to verify> - to clear TIF - while you're at it
Reboot

For WinME, use a boot disk. For NT/2000/XP, log on as Administrator, and use Windows Explorer to delete the History folder of the profile in question.
