url file extension

The *.url extension for Favorites files is not supposed to appear in your
favorites list or in Windows Explorer, but it is appearing. Originally it was
not appearing, but I went to Tools > Folder Options, and the File Types tab,
selected url from the list of extension, clicked the Advanced button, and
checked the "always show extension" checkbox. That resulted in the extension
appearing. I did that because I wanted to load the text of the shortcut file
into Word Pad or Notepad, and it wasn't going in, instead the actual url was
going in. I figured I'd change a url extension to txt in order to be able to
load a file. Anyway, when I was done and wanted to remove the display of the
url extension again, it didn't work. I went to the same place and unchecked
the "always show extension" checkbox. But the extensions are still showing.

How on earth do I get rid of them?

Favorites display the trailing .URL for Internet shortcuts:

If that does not help, download and apply the .URL association fix from here:

OK, I found a simple way to prevent the *.url extensions from appearing. I
did what I did before, I went to Tools > Folder Options, clicked the File
Types tab,
selected url from the list of extension, clicked the Advanced button, and
un-checked the "always show extension" checkbox. However this time I first
made MS Explorer my default browser. That is the only thing different I
needed to do to get the url extension to disappear - make MS explorer the
default browser. Once the extension was gone, I made my other browser the
default browser again, and the extensions did not re-appear.
