Urgent Help to re-install/repair XP

I have urgent need to re-install/repair win XP on my laptop. The system hangs
on booting. The DVD/CDWR is bad. How do I repair the OS without fresh
install. I cannot afford to loose my applications.
 
A repair install requires you to boot from the CD so you better replace the
DVD/CDRW drive first
