Hi. I run Win XP with SP2 and Windows Explorer has started freezing on me
quite regularly. Sometimes when I am actually ussing Explorer to file
search, other times when other programmes are running (from Office XP) and it
just gives me the dreaded 'Sorry, Windows Explorer has encountered a prorblem
and has to close' box.
This is becoming a real pain - half an hour ago it caused the entire PC to
freeze up, even Task Manager would not work, and I had to close and reboot.

Please, please, please, anyone out there got any ideas as to why this is
happening? It's happening two or three times a day how and getting a real
nuisance.

I run Grisift Antivirus software daily (and update its database every other
day), also ZoneAlarm pro and its Spyware checks weekly.

Many thanks in advance - I'm geting pretty desparate about this.

If the information that usasma gave you doesn't help, your computer may
be having hardware problems. Bad RAM, overheating, failing power
supply, failing other components can all cause those symptoms. Here are
some general hardware troubleshooting steps:

http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Hardware_Troubleshooting

Testing hardware failures often involves swapping out suspected parts
with known-good parts. If you can't do the testing yourself and/or are
uncomfortable opening your computer, take the machine to a professional
computer repair shop (not your local equivalent of BigStoreUSA).

Thanks, looks hopeful and helpful.
Will do it on a "quiet day", when I don't have to get a report out in the
post that day.
Cheers

Thanks for this.
I definitely feel iffy about opening up the box, not least because I haven't
got any spare components lieign around here.
But I'll do the troubleshooting bit first.

Cheers

Thanks for trying anyway, much appreciated.
I think the suggestions from usasma might do the trick - I am about to try
them now.
