Urgent - Disk Crash - Backup and Restore

Hi:

This is an urgent issue.
My primary hard disk is about to crash and I am trying to use Windows Backup
to backup the entire hard disk.

Question is: If I restore the entire backup to the new hard disk, will it be
the same as before? Do I have to install Windows XP and other applications?

Are there any better ways to back up or transfer the original settings and
files into the new hard disk with minimum efforts and costs?

I don't think the Windows Backup is going to do what you want. What you
really want to do is image the drive. For that, you will need a
third-party program like Norton Ghost, Acronis TrueImage, etc. I
believe BootItNG also will image and is less expensive than the others.
Another way to go is just put in a new hard drive, slave the old one,
and use the utility that comes with the new hard drive to copy over the
old hard drive.

I am getting a new drive now, so what drive you know will come with the kind
of utility?

AFAIK, drives from major mftrs. such as Western Digital and Maxtor (and
others) will come with utilities. Look on the package before you buy or
ask the salesperson to open the box!
