I have a SMC 7404WBRA but can't figure out how to activate UPNP, even
with a recent firmware (0.24 from Aug 28 2003).

That prevents among other things getting voice to work on MSN.

Any trick to get it to work, or someone would have an update on the
firmware from SMC.

PS: 7404WBRA seems to be the equivalent of a model sold in the US,
maybe the 7004WBRA ?

Goto Start Menu > Run

Type in Services.msc
Press Enter

Look for Universal Plug and Play Device Host
Double Click it, Set to automatic, Close,

Next right click it, and choose Start

Fabrice,

You might get more useful answers from three other forums, two are other
newsgroups alt.internet.wireless and
microsoft.public.windows.networking.wireless. The third is the DSLReports forum

I received the following msg by email, so I post it here:

Hi,

The SMC 7404WBRA is non UPnP compliant. Even not with the latest 0.24
firmware. Your only option is to disable the routers Firewall and rely on a
software firewall like Zonealarm in which you have to enable the right UDP
and TCP ports.
SMC is looking over to develop a new firmware which makes the router UPnP
compliant but the planning for this is unknown

Well, one thing I can say is you're lucky. I had a DSL Modem that had a
built in NAT.. It wasn't uPnP compatible either, and if I would have
disabled the firewall, I would have lost my internet access altogether. Or
at least the DNS portion of it. I wasn't going to pay $65.00 a month for a
static IP (if I could have gotten one since it wasn't a business acct.) so I
went to cable.

I reply to Hans the following (he had written directly by email, see
above)
----------------------------
Hans,

Thanks for your reply.

My only issue is the following: I had not activated the firewall on
the router; based on your mail, it means that then UPNP should work,
as long as I ensure my software firewall (ZoneAlarmPro) does not block
it.

Which is weird, because I don't believe the blockage was coming from
ZoneAlarm (I'm a rather sophisticated user, and have used it for
years).

My understanding is more that if the routeur is not UPNP compliant,
those special kind of calls will not go through.

Let me know if I understand well. Feel free to reply directly in the
newsgroup.

Best,

Fabrice
