I am currently running XP on my home machine with Media Center 2005. I have
been infected with problems. I am thinking of buying Vista Home Premium
upgrade. Will this detect and fix my infections?

Detection of infections does not occur when upgrading to another
operating system. And the only way they will be "fixed" is if you decide
to perform a clean install, which entails wiping the hard drive clean
and starting from scratch. An upgrade installation may very well not
work because of the infections, and even if it does, you will still be
infected!

Why not just remove your infections? Normally, that is a much more
straightforward solution! Since you didn't give us the specs of your PC,
it's impossible to say if the hardware is even capable of handling Vista
or if Vista drivers are available for the hardware.

If you have multiple infections and attempts at removing them prove
futile, reinstalling XP would make much more sense than an upgrade to
Vista.

What is the make and model of this PC? Did it come with an XP
installation CD, a recovery CD, or a hidden recovery partition on the
hard drive? How have you determined you have an actual malware
infection? Perhaps all you need is a simple housecleaning! Post back
with details and we will be able to guide you. Mention what anti-spyware
and anti-virus programs you use. Mention any and all pertinent error
messages, using the complete text. Describe as best you can what is
happening.

No.

Doing an upgrades to a new operating system rather than
clean-installing is usually a good thing to do. The one very important
exception to that is when you are currently experiencing problems.
Upgrading a problem-ridden computer is very likely to exacerbate the
problems, not solve them.
